VARIABLES & SUBSTITUTION

To get my kiddos more familiar with substitution we took a time out for a quick laugh and filled out some mad libs. They really had a good time listening to the silly stories. Afterwards they had a good understanding of substitution.

In their notebooks they took a few notes

WE ARE FINALLY BACK TO SCHOOL & PRACTICING THE ORDER OF OPERATIONS

Today we had a lo-tech day, more like a no tech day. Students were assigned a number and that number corresponded with a problem on the wall. They got up traveled to their problem, wrote it down and then returned to their seat to calculate their answer. This was graded as a skill check and upon their correct answer they received a Batman worksheet to continue practicing the Order of Operations.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS - QR CODE ACTIVITY - “WHAT’S NEXT?”

This activity was inspired by the main misconception about the order of operations. My students, past and present have all struggled to understand that the rules are not to be completed (100% of the time) in the order of PEMDAS. I always stress the actual rule of left to right but it is a continual battle. So to provide and great big opportunity for my current kiddos I created a QR code activity.

In this activity they scan a start code that gives them a starting place. Instead of working the problem they are only saying “what’s next?” So their job is to go around the room looking for the next step. The message would then show them what the work should look like after that step is complete.

Great engaging activity and it caused some great questions and discussion.

This activity will soon be posted on TPT.
