HOMEWORK 11/21/2014

SUBTRACTION EQUATIONS
These kids are ROCKING these equations!!!!! Today we worked some quick examples and away they went. They got this, they really really got this!
ADDITION EQUATIONS PARTNER PRACTICE ACTIVITY
With a partner students chose to be partner A or Partner B, he partner had their own problems to work. When they were finished with each problem, they counted to 3 and said their answers aloud to each other. Hopefully they were saying the same thing. If not they had to conference with each other and learn from their mistakes.
ADDITION EQUATIONS
To pick up where the "Just Curious" assignment left off we are going to begin with Addition Equations. FYI students did awesome on the "Just Curious" assignment and discovered on their own that each equation requires the opposite operation to solve. WOW that's HUGE!

JUST CURIOUS
We are about to start solving algebraic equations. So to lead us into the second half of our unit I presented everyone with these problems.
Students were told to explain how they found the value of the variable. For example on #1 the statement "3+29=32" is not an explanation. I am looking for something like, I subtracted 32 and 29 to get 3.
I am hoping this will lead us into a discussion about inverse operations. Fingers Crossed!

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION MATCH GAME
I put a sticker on the back of each student. It was either an algebraic expression or a phrase. Each student had the job of making a match, which meant they had to find the 2 students in the classroom who matched, 1 would have the phrase and the other would have the written expression. When students located a match they had to get a second opinion and then deliver the match to me. When students made a match I recorded it. This was an easy formative assessment and the students even enjoyed themselves! Win Win!!!!

TRANSLATING WORDS TO MATH
Today students are working on translating word phrases into algebraic expressions.
To begin they will be watching a slide show showing different keywords for each operation. On their paper they are missing a few of the terms so they will have to listen very carefully to list the words that were left off their paper.
Then everyone will flip over their paper and practice making algebraic expressions.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS
We began with this guy to see how many students remembered the order of operations. I polled the class to get their answers. Instead of giving the correct answer, we watched a brain pop video.
After the video I worked the above problem. In the first class no one had given the correct answer. They all began talking a bit when they saw my answer. I heard "please excuse my dear aunt sally" and "she divided before she multiplied."
We watched the video again and I told everyone to listen very carefully for the rules. Many students realized very quickly.
I then explained that the reason we need to excuse Aunt Sally is because she is misleading. Students are typically lead to believe that multiplication is to be done before division and addition is to be completed before subtraction. This is untrue.
To help us remember correctly all students drew this organizer in their math journal.
