Homework 10/27/11

Today in class we began to really look at keywords in word problems. These keywords are our clue to working the problem correctly.

Tonight's homework is to complete 4 notecard. 1 for each operation. Each card should have as many keywords as possible.

THE BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today in class a student actually referenced something that was put on the blog. I smiled really big. I just want everyone to know that this blog could be even AWESOMER (student speak) if we could get everyone to join. Please encourage your friends to join. I would absolutely love it if all the 6th graders were able to get on the blog and participate. We could really do a lot if everyone would get online.

Thanks guys, I think you are all SUPER DUPER!

???????????????WORD PROBLEMS???????????????

As we are finishing up our study of multiplication and divison of fractions I am beginning to see some problems. I am not trying to be funny but some of you guys have problems with word problems. Today we are going to talk about our recipe cards we made yesterday and how they will help us answer our Short Response Questions. WAIT!What good is to know how to write an answer if you cannot understand the question? So today we are going to focus on working word problems. We are going to start off simple and work our way up to the more difficult problems that we will likely see on our test at the end of the school year.

The following 2 websites are packed with information and word problems.

DO NOT FORGET, YOU CAN NOT FORGET, PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO STUDY

Operation Multiplication is in full swing. All students in the Middle School are being put to the test. So please don't forget to be studying your facts. Last week you were responsible for 0's - 2's. Most groups are finishing up their testing now. This week make sure you are studying your 3's & 4's.

For some extra practice enjoy the following activities.

Hello Class!

GUESS WHAT?????

It's Monday!

Most of the classes will not be starting anything new due to the many that have to complete their quiz from Friday. For those who have their quiz complete they will begin working on a small project.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!

We had a quiz today. Many students did not finish. Please Please Please review over the weekend if you didn't finish. Also I had many students today that said "I did it in my head" Let me see if I can say this clearly, in math you must SHOW YOUR WORK!

So friends please take my advice and show your work. This is the only way I can see where your errors are occuring.

Have a great weekend and I'll see you on Monday

10/20/11 HOMEWORK

Tonight the homework assignment will be worked on in class, so if your child says they have a math worksheet this means they did not finish it in class.

Come on out for Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent teacher conferences tonight from 5-7:30. Please come on out to get your report cards. It is also an opportunity for moms and dads to speak to the teachers.

10/19/11 HOMEWORK

Sorry I didn't get this updated last night, my computer decided to take the night off. Here is the assignment.

Remember if you forget your math book there is an online textbook you are welcome to use. You can look through the old posts on see the one titled "Homework Help"

TO SIMPLIFY OR NOT TO SIMPLIFY? THAT IS THE QUESTION

A fraction may need to be simplified if:
  • Both numerator and denominator are even.
  • Both numerator and denominator are odd.
  • The numerator is a factor of the denominator.

HOMEWORK 10/18/11

PAGE 256 1-8 & 14-21

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS

Just starting the 2nd 9-weeks and I have already messed up. Yesterday we learned how to multiply fractions by fractions and reviewed how to simplify our answers. Well it seems that I forgot to teach everyone how to multiply fractions by a whole number.

So guess what we are doing today? Yep, we are multiplying fractions and whole numbers.

For example, with 5 x 1/3 you first have to change 5 to 5/1 and then multiply by 1/3. First you multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators. You will get 5/3.

This is an improper fraction and must be turned into a mixed number.

Not every problem will be like this. If the problem was 3 x 1/8 that would be 3/8. This answer is already simplified.

DO YOU REMEMBER?????

It's Friday! No Homework!

In class today we are going to see what we remember for the week.....10 questions covering integers and the numberline and also the coordinate grid.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

What's the point?

The point is today we are talking about the Coordinate Plane a.k.a Coordinate Grid. We will be building on the students prior knowledge of coordinates and plotting them on the Coordinate Grid.

WHOOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First I want to say how proud I am of all the 6th grade students. This year is the first year I have ever had to teach Integers (Positive and Negative Numbers) and they are doing great. Yesterday we learned about Addition and Subtraction of Integers and sadly I realized at the end of the day that we are not responsible for that content. AHHHHHH, WE DIDN'T HAVE TO LEARN THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I am sad to report that a whole day was lost, not wasted, on Addition and Subtraction of Integers.

Sorry :(

HOMEWORK - 10/12/11

SORRY FOR THE HOMEWORK TONIGHT BUT IN MY BRAIN IT IS STILL TUESDAY. WE DO HAVE A WORKSHEET TO BE COMPLETED TONIGHT ABOUT ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE PLEASE CHECK OUT THE PREVIOUS POST AND LISTEN TO THE SONG.

FOR THE WORKSHEET - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, USE 1 OF THE METHODS WE LEARNED IN CLASS TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING INTEGERS

Today we are going to begin talking about adding and subtracting integers. We may not make it to subtraction today, if not we will get to it tomorrow. We will be using hands on materials, the Smart Board, simple plus and minus signs, and the numberline to help us achieve our goal for the day. We will also discuss the integer rules that apply to addition and subtraction. However that is not my ultimate goal for the day.

The following video is a cute way to remember the rules for addition with integers.

The only thing you need to know for subtraction is to use the Additive Inverser (a.k.a - Add the Oppposite) When you add the opposite in the problem you will make the problem addition and then you follow the addition rules.

I AM A DAY LATE WELCOMING EVERYONE BACK...SORRY

Yesterday was kind of a blur. So I need to welcome everyone back.
WELCOME BACK!!!!!!!!!!

We began talking about number lines and integers (positive and negative numbers)

In class students were to create a K-W-L chart on the back of their homework page. They were to write what they Know and Want to know in class. After the lesson they were instructed to fill in any information they learned.

Also they were assigned the back side of the worksheet. On this they were supposed to use the vocabulary associated with Positives and Negatives to help them complete the assignment. For example, a question might have said "write the integer for a deposit of $20." They would first look at the keyword deposit and know if that relates to positive or negative to determine if they use a (-) or a (+) sign in front of the number given. In this example the answer would have been +$20.

Also from the worksheet they were to answer questions about absolute value (the distance away from 0). This is always a positive number because it is talking about distance. Absolute value questions are written using a sympol that looks like 2 parallel lines. Between the parallel lines is a number, either positive or negative and they are to determine how far that number is from 0. The realized really quickly that this is always a positve of the number inside the parallel lines. For example, the absolute value of -2 is written like this, l -2 l. The answer is 2 because on the numberline -2 is 2 spaces from 0.
