DIVISIBILITY THINK - N - SORT ACTIVITY

Today is our 2nd day to be working with the divisibility rules. In class we had a quick discussion to make sure all students have a clear understanding of the rules and what is expected of them. Afterwards, each student was given a copy of the rules for their notebook to be placed on page 63 (page 65 7th block).

A number is divisible by ……..
2 – if the last digit of the number is even.
3 – if the sum of the digits makes a multiple of 3.
4 – if the last 2 digits makes a multiple of 4.
5 – if the last digit is a 5 or 0.
6 – if the number is divisible by both 2 and 3.
9 – if the sum of the digits make a multiple of 9.

10 – if the last digit is a 0.

Students were then given a note card with a number on it. Around the room I placed posters with categories I chose; 
  1. Divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9. & 10
  2. Divisible by 2, 5, & 10
  3. Divisible by 2 & 4
  4. Divisible by 2, 3, 4, & 6
  5. Divisible by 2, 3, & 6
  6. Divisible by 3 only
  7. Divisible by 5 only
Students were then instructed to find their correct location in the room. I used this activity as a quick formative assessment to see how well they are understanding the rules.

DIVISIBILITY RULES

You have to know the divisibility rules, they can be very helpful when trying to figure out factors especially when you are dealing with numbers that are out of your comfort zone like 482.

Divisibility Rules

A number is divisible by ......
  • 2 if the last digit of the number is an even number.
  • 3 if the sum of all the digits in the number can be divided evenly by 3.
  • 4 if the last 2 digits of the number can be evenly divided by 4.
  • 5 if the last digit of the number is a 5 or 0.
  • 6 if the the number is divisible by 2 and 3.
  • 9 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9.
  • 10 if the last digit of the number is a 0.

She gave a couple problems, they were no good

So we listened to the rules and now we believing
You can divide by 2 is the last digits even

Divide by 3? It different you see
The sum of the digits has to divide by 3

The rule for 4 is about the last 2 digits
And if you can divide them by 4 do ya get it?

Dividin by 5 is easy you know
If the number end with 5 or 0

To divdide by 6 you gotta say yes
To 3 and 4 with success

Dividin by 9 is like 3 but this time
You add the digits and divide by 9

And then theres 10 its so easy
When the number ends in 0 it’s a breezy

She gave us some problems bout 12 or 13
And we yelled to the teacher “yo white this aint nothing”
Looked at the homework, we were done quick
Knowin the divisibility rules does the trick

INEQUALITIES - INTRODUCTION AND NOTE TAKING ACTIVITY

Students were introduced to inequalities today with Walking Notes to get them up and moving today instead of sitting the entire class period. The note taking sheet has 16 squares that need to be filled up. Below is the blank copy the students received in class. Their mission was to travel around the room and find the notes that correspond to each box. This was a great exercise for them in following directions.


The finished notes page was taped to page 61 in the math notebook.

SOLVING EQUATIONS PUZZLE - PRACTICE



The above pictures are just examples to help students remember how to show their work. Everyone by now should know to do the inverse operation in each equation. This again means to do the opposite of the operation present in the problem. Above I put a squiggle (technical term for canceling out) over the terms that are canceled. This concept is not fully understood at this point and we will continue to work towards that. Many students are canceling because "I said so" and that is working fine for them for the time being. 





When you have solved all the equations you can start putting the puzzle together. Each equation will match up to its solution like the example above shows. Upon completion all students glued their puzzle to a piece of colored paper for the math notebook.

EQUATIONS BY FLASHLIGHT

Students are getting their first Flashlight Friday! We are reviewing/practicing solving addition equations. The windows were darkened and the flashlights were handed out and kids are everywhere. Some even figured out a way to lay under their desk and hang the flashlight from their seat so they have a more hands free approach.

"DOES THIS SOLUTION MAKE MY EQUATION LOOK TRUE?"

WE ARE GRADING HOMEWORK? YEP THE STUDENTS ARE GRADING PRETEND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS THAT I CREATED. I HAVE 5 DIFFERENT SHEETS THAT WILL BE PASSED OUT THROUGHOUT THE CLASS AND THE STUDENTS WILL GRADE THEM.

THE EXPECTATIONS ARE THAT EACH STUDENT SUBSTITUTES THE SOLUTION INTO THE EQUATION AND THEN WORKS IT OUT. IF THE SOLUTION MAKES THE EQUATION TRUE THEN THE STUDENTS PROBLEM IS CORRECT. IF THE SOLUTION DOES NOT MAKE THE EQUATION TRUE THEN THE STUDENTS PROBLEM IS INCORRECT. AFTER ALL PAPERS HAVE BEEN GRADED THE STUDENTS ARE GOING TO FIND OTHERS WHO GRADED THE SAME PAPER AND THEN COMPARE TO SEE IF THEY ALL GAVE THE SAME GRADE ON THE HOMEWORK.
