SECRET CODE - ORDER OF OPERATIONS AND "THE WELL"

Math In Movies: National Treasure

We are about to finish up our secret code project for a bit. Students have created their expressions and have began working on their key and their coded messages. 3rd and 5th block students will be trading messages and 6th and 7th block will be trading messages. These are all different and unique to the novel "The Well" that they are reading in Language Arts. When the messages are complete they will be labeled and sealed up until the novel is complete. At that time students will be given a 2 part assessment. Part 1 to crack the code and translate the message. Part 2 to create a response to the message.

ORDER OF OPERATIONS

I polled the class to get their answers before we discussed the Order of Operations.
I knew many of them would have briefly forgotten the rules or gotten some of them
mixed up. The majority of the answers were 4 and 11.

It doesn't matter what you use to remember the rules as long as you remember
that Multiplication and Division get done from left to right and then Addition
and Subtraction are done left to right.

EXPONENTS

 Today in class we talked about Exponents. Students were somewhat familiar with them already so it was partly a review. To begin our discussion students were asked what they think of when they hear or see the word exponent. Below are some comments;

  • powers of
  • repeated multiplication
  • base times base
  • multiplication

This sheet was filled out together in class and taped to page 35 (Advanced Math taped to page 41)

This was a simulation of the shakers they used in class today. The students were given a shaker with a white die and a green die inside. The shaker guarantees no dice will hit the floor. The white die represented the base and the green die represented the exponent. I had to use a blue to represent the base so they could see it on the smartboard. One page 36 (A.M pg. 41) the students wrote down the problems they created and worked them out. Being sure to discuss their answers with each other before continuing.

ALGEBRA VOCABULARY

Yesterday we began our Algebra unit with a vocabulary hunt. Students were allowed to wonder around the lobby looking at definitions. They had a crossword puzzle to solve. There will be a vocabulary test on October 28.
