4/18/2014 NOTES

All of the above shapes are polygons - closed figures with 3 or more sides.
Polygons can be regular or irregular
Regular Polygon - all sides are equal
Irregular Polygon - all sides are not equal

Below are the different angles to help you understand how triangles get their names based on angles.

RATIOS, RATES, PERCENTS, & UNIT CONVERSIONS JEOPARDY REVIEW GAME

 Teachers Pay Teachers

To have a bit of fun and review for our test we will be playing Jeopardy tomorrow in class. Students will be on teams but will not know whose team they are on (I do this hoping they will work harder to earn points).

UNIT REVIEW DAY 1 - PRACTICE PACKET (due 4/15/2014)

Today in class students completed a practice packet. This was copied from the text book. All circled problems are due tomorrow.

If you would like extra practice you are welcome to complete the packet or any problems in the packet. Here are the answers to the rest of the packet.

CONVERTING METRIC UNITS PRACTICE (ANSWERS INCLUDED)

In class students practiced 1-10 and we checked them in class. I encouraged everyone to continue practicing at home. If needed to check the rest of the worksheet the answers are below.

CONVERTING METRIC UNITS

METERS, LITERS, & GRAMS

PREFIXES -
kilo-
hecto-
deca-
unit-     meter/liter/gram
deci-
centi-
milli-

To help everyone remember the prefixes for conversions we took time to make up our own mnemonic device. Let me say there were some very unusual creations. I shared the one I use,

King Henry Does Usually Drink Chocolate Milk

The method I use to help students convert metrics is decimal movement. This means they are multiplying or dividing by 10 and powers of 10 without doing any multiplication or division. Let me say they were some very happy kids.

Example:

9 cm = _______ mm

Students counted the places from C to M and found it to be 1 so they came up with 90 mm.

BE CAREFUL----- the U stands for units which represent LITERS, METERS, and GRAMS

CUSTOMARY UNIT CONVERSION - MATH RELAY

We all had a good time playing our math relay yesterday in the gym. It was fun to get out of the classroom.

Students were put into groups of 3. Here are some pictures from the game.

4/9/2014 PRACTICE - NOT HOMEWORK

Thank You - math-aids.com

In class we practiced these problems together. This was an exercise to achieve some success in class. All students received a check mark for each correct answer. If they got at least 4 checks they received a 100% classroom grade for today. Credit is also given for asking questions.

4/8/2014 HOMEWORK

In class we went over 1-5 together.
1.) 12.62 yards
2.) 87.16 pints
3.) 0.27 yards
4.) 84,532.80 feet
5.) 2,749.32 inches

HOW TO CONVERT CUSTOMARY UNITS

To start class today we began by filling out the following worksheet as practice so everyone would know exactly how to show ALL their work. (sorry its sideways)

Below is a step by step walk through the 2nd example:

How many quarts are there in 9 gallons?

CUSTOMARY UNITS TO KNOW

I gave everyone a copy of this to glue into their math notebook.

ROUNDING PRACTICE

Today's homework requires everyone to round answers to the nearest hundredth. Before the lesson we had a quick practice to make sure everyone remembered how to correctly round numbers.

I reminded everyone of the rules for rounding.

*Underline the place value you need to round to
*Look to the right of that place value
*If the number is 5 or greater round the underlined digit up 1
*If the number is 4 or smaller leave the underlined digit the same
*Remember all digits to the right of the underlined digit will be removed after you have rounded

Answers:
1.) 4.63
2.) 17.21
3.) 0.33
4.) 2.93
5.) 187.73
6.) 0.7

***REMEMBER*** In order to round the the hundredths place you must have at least 3 decimal places. Below is a picture of one of my students papers.

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

In class today we are practicing with problems 1-4. During class I was stationed at the Help Desk to answer questions. Each student can come to me for help up to 3 times.

If students did well with problems 1-4 they were allowed to go ahead and begin tonight's homework assignment.

CURRENT TARGET

We will be finishing up with percents today. We must move on. Please if you need more help with this concept please look back at the videos I posted at the end of March.
