IN CLASS WORK (PRACTICE SOLVING 1-STEP ADDITION/SUBTRACTION EQUATIONS)
These 10 problems are on the board in the classroom. If you are absent please print these or write them down so you can practice them. This is not a graded assignment and is just practice. The homework will be posted next.

CLASSWORK 11/27/2012
WE ARE GRADING HOMEWORK? YEP THE STUDENTS ARE GRADING PRETEND HOMEWORK THAT I CREATED. I HAVE 7 DIFFERENT SHEETS THAT WILL BE PASSED OUT THROUGHOUT THE CLASS AND THE STUDENTS WILL GRADE THEM.
THE EXPECTATIONS ARE THAT EACH STUDENT SUBSTITUTES THE SOLUTION INTO THE EQUATION AND THEN WORK IT OUT. IF THE SOLUTION MAKES THE EQUATION TRUE THEN THE STUDENTS PROBLEM IS CORRECT. IF THE SOLUTION DOES NOT MAKE THE EQUATION TRUE THEN THE STUDENTS PROBLEM IS INCORRECT. AFTER ALL PAPERS HAVE BEEN GRADED THE STUDENTS ARE GOING TO FIND OTHERS WHO GRADED THE SAME PAPER AND THEN COMPARE TO SEE IF THEY ALL GAVE THE SAME GRADE ON THE HOMEWORK.

EQUATIONS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS
Goodness I am behind. We have gotten past combining like terms and using the distributive property so now we can concentrate on equations.
Equations are much like expressions except for 1 or 2 MAJOR things. Its all in the way they look. An equation has an equal sign (hint "equ" leads us to think equal) and also an equation gives a value after the equal sign. In an expression you do not have either of those things.
As we are beginning our work with equations we are starting with solutions and substitution. This is all mainly review because we worked with substitution when we were studying expressions. However now we are looking at both sides of the equal sign.
For example
3 + x = 9 for x = 6 (this says that the value of x is 6, you must substitute it in to see if you get 9)
3 + 6 = 9
9 = 9 (yes, 6 is a solution because it makes the statement 3 + x = 9 TRUE).
Another example
4m = 24 for m = 7 (substitute the 7 for the m)
4 x 7 = 24
28 = 24 (since the 2 values are not the same, this means that 7 is not a solution)

WORD PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have begun our unit on word problems. Before you roll your eyes and take a nap or just plum give up STOP! We are going to take this really slow and go step by step so that when we hear "word problems" we won't freak out. We won't leave a blank, we will leave nothing but the correct answer.

EXPRESSIONS & SUBSTITUTION EXTRA PRACTICE
LETTERS ARE NUMBERS?
What do you mean a letter is a number? That's nuts right?
Well, not completely. In algebra you have letters that have a job to take the place of numbers; these numbers are usually unknown or numbers that can change. Math folks call these letters variables because they can be different. When given an algebraic expression (remember that means numbers, operations and at least 1 variable) you may or may not be given a value to represent the variable. Starting off we will work with an expression and I will give you a value for the variable.
To work with expressions it is very very very important that you understand the expression you are reading. For example:
a.) 3m {This means 3 times the value of m}
b.) x - 7 {This means the value of x minus 7, or take 7 away from the value of x}
c.) 4p + 2 {This means 4 times the value of p and then add 2}
When a value is given for a variable you are going to use substitution. Just like when I was absent there was another teacher in my place which is why they call them substitute teachers. Also like the coach sending in a player to replace you during a game.
In example a.) 3m again means 3 times the value of m, if the value of m is 7, this means to multiply 3 times 7. Often students want to just replace the letter with the value and say the answer is 37.
In example b.) x - 7, if the value of x is 18, this means to subtract 18 - 7. Not as tricky because the operation sign is there to direct you correctly.
In example c.) 4p + 2, if the value of p is 3, this means to multiply 4 times 3 first and then add 2. It should be written like this 4(3) + 2 (remember parentheses is another symbol for multiplication). Multiply first and then add 2.
Substitution is not hard as long as you understand what the expression is and what it is asking you to do.

The order of operations is a tricky topic for students. You probably are expecting me to talk about my aunt Sally....WRONG!!! You won't catch me talking about Sally because I don't think she is very helpful in teaching kids about the order of operations. So what is? I think purple elephants can do the trick. PURPLE ELEPHANTS?

To start our new unit we are going to start by taking a pre-test over vocabulary words. This activity will not be counted as a grade but all correct answers will be counted and bonus points will be assigned. Afterwards there is a Word Search to be completed that will count as a homework grade.
