TEST IS FRIDAY!!!!!

The test is Friday and I am worried that we may not have a great understanding of the units and what they represent. So today that's what we are working on. There will be 5 questions on the test that are asking for the unit to best describe something. So to practice this the assignment for today is....

I HAVE WHO HAS?

Today in class we reviewed converting customary units with the game "I Have Who Has?" It was interesting. Most everyone has begun to use the "Goal Post" method to solve these problems. If you need a refresher you can read yesterdays posts.

Tonight for homework - As an attempt to wrap up customary units, I need you to write a recipe card about the following problem.

A can of green beans weighs 13 ounces. How many pounds does a case of 24 cans weigh?

A NEW METHOD?

I have a new method to share. It is Mr. Estes' Goal Post Method, today in class we will look at this method, work many examples and hopefully some of you will find it to be a more successful method for you to use.

For tonights assignment we are going to work the following 10 problems. If you prefer the old method you are welcome to use it on tonights problems.

READ the problem carefully, see if you can point out the mistakes and make a conclusion about the safety of the gentleman who is about to jump.

CUSTOMARY MEASUREMENT CONVERSIONS

Today in class was very interesting. We started with a seating game that turned out to be a great review. We then began talking about converting customary measures (inches, feet, gallons, quarts, tons, etc.). Here are the lecture notes that were seen in class.

Here is a list of all the Customary Units we will be working with:

   CUSTOMARY UNITS

1 yard = 3 feet                                                     

1 mile = 5280 feet                                                       

1 foot = 12 inches                                               

1 cup = 8 ounces                    

1 quart = 2 pints

1 gallon = 4 quarts

1 ton = 2000 pounds

1 pound = 16 ounces

Monday we will start with a review and play a card game called "I have Who has"

RATIOS & PERCENTS REVIEW

This was originally going to be a quiz but I changed my mind so it is now a daily grade/homework grade. You may use a calculator. The following information may come in handy so please read it and use it.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

A proportion is a statement showing that two ratios are equivalent.

***So that means when you are asked to write a proportion you are writing two equivalent ratios***

CONVERTING MEASUREMENTS

Today's Do Now was about measurements both customary and metric. You will be given another sheet very similar to this one in class tomorrow. Please make sure you know all of these measurements by Thursday for the quiz.

"I CAN"

Today in class we went over all the "I CAN" statements for our unit on Ratio, Rates, & Percents. Check out the picture below, as of today everything but the last bullet has been covered.

Tomorrow in class you will be working problems to review all the content from the unit. On Thursday all students will be taking a quiz over all the content covered up to this point.

I will post the review problems tomorrow.

Our review for this Friday is to remember how to add unlike fractions.

In class we began with our Do Now that led us into a discussion about changing percents (%) into decimals.

Knowing how to change %'s to decimals can help doing some percent problems quicker and allow you to work without using the formula shown below

Simply change the percent to a decimal and multiply by the number given. REMEMBER the word "of" means to multiply.

Don't stress guys. I told you all this is something new. I also said that nobody knows how to work the problems like this. We will keep working problems like this tomorrow. You will be learning the old method tomorrow.


With tonight's homework you can always divide the value by the number of fives that make up the percent. To do this:
1. mark the percent given in the problem
2. Count all the 5's that make up the percent from the problem
3. Divide the value given in the problem by the number of 5's.
4. Take that number and multiply by 20 to get the final answer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPLANATION

I know you've heard for a very very long time that explaining is important. All of us know that 25 divided by 5 is 5, but because the man in the suit was not great at explaining he could not make Ma and Pa Kettle believe him. Sadly because Ma and Pa Kettle are persuasive their arguments are believeable.

RATES & UNIT RATE

Today in class we continued to talk about ratios but applied them to sentence problems. The following are all the slides from today's class.

We answered this in class before we discussed how tosolve the problems.
Most of us know how to solve these problems without realizing.
75 dollars              = ________ dollars
15 hamburgers                  1 hamburger
Treating this just like equivalent ratios, we divided both sides by 15 to find
out that each hamburger cost $5.

7 hours    =  35 hours

Again treating this just like equivalent ratios we multiplied the numerator
and denominator by 5 to get 20 lawns.

WELCOME BACK FRIENDS!!!!

Well it was certainly interesting today getting to reconnect with everyone. I am sad I won't be at school Wednesday and Thursday to hang out in the computer lab with everyone, but that'll be ok. I'll be back Friday to see what everyone has learned.
